COURT DAMAGE
Dear GNBA Friends and Neighbors:

As the active season here at the beach begins, we are once again reminded of our collective responsibility to care for the many assets of our wonderful community. These assets include the new court, which opened just last year to great enthusiasm and is used by so many of you.

We are disappointed to inform you that in just the past 48 hours, the court has been damaged by one or more people who violated the reasonable rules concerning use of the court. The attached photos show the scuff marks and gouges that go through the paint and into the concrete. While the rules have been clearly posted and shared numerous times across many platforms, we feel compelled to remind all members of GNBA that NOTHING should ever be used on the court that can cause such damage. A non-exhaustive list of prohibited items includes bicycles, scooters, heelies, skateboards, etc. Common sense should dictate this, but it obviously needs to be repeated. Also, parents should be reminded that children under the age of 12 are  NOT allowed to use the court unsupervised and that those 12 and over should be familiar with and able to abide by all court rules.

We hope that all of you will continue to take an owner’s  interest in the care and condition of the court. If you see anyone misusing the court, please do your best to remind them of the rules. At the very least, get in touch with a member of the BOG or Court Committee to notify them. We also note that any damage caused to the court that can be identified as having been caused by a particular member, their child or their guest will result in BOG action to recover the cost of repair. We have not ruled out the use of video cameras to assist in our monitoring of the situation.

Dear GNBA Friends and Neighbors:

Our wonderful court has now been open for several weeks and, though the weather has not yet fully cooperated, it’s been great to see people out and enjoying it.

We are pleased to provide the attached information about the new, online scheduling system that will be used this year. Thanks to the hard work of Russ Moore and the court committee, we will now have a reservation platform that will provide easy-to-use and reliable scheduling so that we can optimize use of the court; it promises to be a busy season. As of Saturday, April 23, the scheduling system will be active and those who have reserved the court for a given time will have priority over other users.

Please take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the information in the attached instructions and feel free to get in touch with Russ with any questions: russ1948moore@gmail.com.

Once again, we’d ask all members of the community to treat the court as the owners of it that you all are, which includes respecting all court rules (which are clearly posted at the gates), cleaning up trash, not using anything (including running shoes!) that can mark up the court, and being courteous to your fellow players and the court’s neighbors.

We look forward to seeing you out there!

Hello Friends and Neighbors,
It’s that time of year again. The Easter bunny is going to be cruising around the neighborhood on Easter Sunday, April 17 at 10:30 a.m.  Head outside and give the bunny and classic cars a wave.  If you have a little one candy-filled eggs will be distributed.   Hope to see you all out there cheering the bunny and cars on.  Have a happy and healthy holiday.  If you would like to know the exact route for little ones to participate please email korshal@mac.com for details.

Dear Friends and Neighbors:

We have had a wonderful first week of use on our new multi-sport court and the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. We hope you all get the chance to get out and move around this summer and maybe even learn a new sport!

A few reminders regarding the reservation procedure and court etiquette:

            (i) Until a more formal - and possibly web-based - reservation system is implemented, please continue to use the sign-in sheets by the street-side gate. You may sign up for a court no earlier than 8:00 A.M. on the day preceding the day of play. New sheets will be added each Saturday morning at 8:00 A.M.

(ii) If the court has been reserved for tennis, the entire court has been reserved and no one else may reserve at that time for pickleball or basketball. Similarly, if a reservation has been made for pickleball or basketball, the court may NOT then be reserved for tennis. (Though this may seem self-evident, we have already had a few instances of two different parties signing up for tennis and pickleball at the same time.) If you are the first to reserve a given time slot for pickleball, please consider reserving pickleball Court #1 (Clubhouse side) to leave open the possibility that another party may use the basketball court.

(iii) Please remove all trash, including tennis ball cans and old tennis balls. A reminder as well: no food is allowed on the court. A disconcerting amount of food wrappers were left on the court this week. Please be considerate to your neighbors and follow the clearly posted rules and leave the court as clean as you found it.

A special thanks to Terra and Russ Moore for their enthusiastic participation in the court committee and their good stewardship of the court in its opening week. Please be in touch with them or any member of the BOG with any questions. You can also email questions and comments to court.gnba@gmail.com.

See you on the court!

Dear Neighbors,

My name is Lena Cosentino and I am the creator of the little free garden.  It was my tenth birthday and I wanted to make the Little Free Garden because I love to cook with my mom and we always need fresh herbs in the recipes.  I first saw a community garden when I volunteered with F.R.E.S.H., in New London clearing out raised garden beds.  I wanted to have something like that for our neighborhood to enjoy.  So, I asked for a garden for my birthday.  Covid birthdays have been hard to celebrate so people have to get creative.  My mom had me write a proposal and present it to the board.  They approved of my idea and we started on the garden.  Lots of people around the neighborhood helped me make improvements.  This year I will be growing mint (in a pot so it won’t spread), basil, sage, parsley, lavender, thyme, dill, oregano, and rosemary.  I will water and weed the garden.  I hope you all use the herbs in the little free garden this season.  Thank you to everyone who helped.  Sincerely, Lena

March 29, 2021
The Easter Bunny will be hopping by the neighborhood accompanied by classic cars.  At 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 4th there will be a parade.  The route will be the same as for the 4th of July.  Please come outside and wave-along the bunny.  Small treats will be passed out to children along the way.  Hope to see you all soon.  If you have any questions please email Kerry at korshal@mac.com

Dear Giants Neck Friends and Neighbors:

The Board is happy to report that renovation of the court is beginning this week. Classic Turf will be onsite Monday to begin removing the existing fencing. During construction, there will at times be trucks and equipment in the road alongside the court. The road will nonetheless be passable at all times, except for the day on which they are pouring the concrete. We will provide further details on that as the day approaches.

Happy Spring!
The Board of Governors

Our first community tree lighting was a success in large part because of community involvement.  A big thanks to the Vorih family for helping engineer the tree so it actually stood upright, MJ Agostini for the use of power for the lights.  The Wesoly family for providing the stake that holds up the tree, the Cook's who brought the 'stage' and inflatable flamingos, and the Lena's who lent a much-needed extension cord.  Lastly, to my own family who goes along with my elaborate ideas in the spirit of community, I thank you (especially for making 74 luminaries).

To all community members who placed ornaments on the tree thank you for your contributions.  To those who donned Santa suits and Christmas sweaters your holiday cheer shined bright on our beautiful evening.  The wassail and cider were a welcome treat.

For the water lovers among us there will be a polar plunge on New Year's Day. Who is ready to wash away 2020’s bad energy and to start afresh?  The Polar Plunge will take place on January 1st at 12 p.m. at West Beach.  Prizes and bragging rights will be awarded.  We hope to see you there!

Best, Kerry

Dear Giants Neck Beach Neighbors and Friends:

As you know, Monday, December 7, was the date on which ballots for the court proposal were due. The Board of Governors met Wednesday night (December 9) to tally the votes, and we are happy to report that the proposal passed by a vote of 92-21. A special thank you to John and Pandy Wohler, who attended the meeting as neutral observers of the ballot count. Thank you also to everyone who took the time to consider the proposal and return a ballot. Both the size of the turnout and the decisive margin by which the measure passed make it clear that the proposal is something that the Association as a whole strongly supports. We will be following up shortly with information on next steps, but we wanted to let you know right away that you can start looking forward to enjoying a beautiful new multi-purpose court next summer.

Best wishes for a Happy Holiday season,

GNBA Board of Governors

November 30, 2020

Please join your neighbors on December 12th at 5 p.m. for the lighting of the Giants Neck Beach holiday tree on the Brockett Road triangle.  The rain date is December 13th at 5 p.m.

We ask that each family hang an ornament on the tree prior to the lighting.  Ornaments will be kept for future trees or can be retrieved after the holiday season.

Please remember your mask.

Pumpkin Carving Contest Results!

Thank you all for participating in the GNBA 2020 pumpkin carving contest.  We had a great turnout with nearly 50 entries on the wall.  Three pumpkins took home awards.

Congratulations to Nancy and Gregg Cook (for the hand), Andrei Zakow (for the pumpkin within a pumpkin), and the Heera family (for the lighthouse). Your entries wowed the judge.  Honorable mention goes to Larry Corona for his toast to 2020 entry.  All GNBA children received gift cards to Gum Drops and Lollipops for their carving efforts.

Let's make this a new beach tradition.  Get those creative juices thinking about next year's submissions.  The goats at The Book Barn were the happy recipients of the leftover pumpkins.

Be well everyone, we will have a Tree lighting ceremony in December.  Details will follow.  Thanks again, Kerry

Bathing Water Sampling Results

Ledge Light Health District conducted bathing water sampling on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 and all bathing water samples were below the bacterial action levels set by the State of Connecticut except Highland Park in the Town of Ledyard, L&M Beach and Greens Harbor in the City of New London, and Lords Point Beach in the Town of Stonington.  Areas with significant bacteria results will be re-sampled on Friday, May 25, 2018.  Results of the re-sample(s) will be forwarded as soon as they become available.  Please be aware that rain or other contamination events occurring before the Wednesday morning sampling can lead to elevated bacterial counts, especially in bathing areas with storm water runoff (storm drain pipes or extensive impervious surfaces) or low water turnover (inland bathing areas).  We recommend those individuals responsible for the bathing areas take these events into consideration.
